The Dumpling King (2019)

A short documentary about a Chinese fisher and cook who goes fishing with his boat on weekends at Santa Barbara Habor and owns a dumpling restaurant in Isla Vista, California. 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival, 16th Chinese American Film Festival Official Selection.

A short documentary directed by Zizheng (Boris) Liu. It is about a Chinese fisher and cook who goes fishing with his boat on weekends at Santa Barbara Habor and owns a dumpling restaurant in Isla Vista, CA.

"The Dumpling King is striking for its cinematography, its editing, and for the special quality of empathy that is a signature of Liu’s work. Whereas most filmmakers capture Santa Barbara’s signature white beaches and blue skies, Liu presents his immigrant fisher-cook protagonist as a study of grey-on-grey with the color of Mr. Wang's hooded sweatshirt dissolving into the sea and sky on a muted, foggy day."
